Speaking on his podcast, prominent Leeds United journalist Phil Hay has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur hold an interest in Illan Meslier.
Spurs have built quite an exciting young core in north London over the past 18 months, and it seems as though they’re now eyeing Meslier up as their future number one.
Of course, Hugo Lloris has been Spurs’ first-choice keeper for over a decade now, but at the age of 35, the clock is ticking on the Frenchman’s career.
Meslier, at just 22, would be a natural successor to Meslier, and according to Hay, Spurs are very keen on the young goalkeeper.
What’s been said?
Hay spoke about Spurs’ interest in Meslier.
“There is loads and loads of interest in Meslier. I do feel like he’s going to be one of Leeds’ most important and probably best players this season,” Hay said.
“Tottenham are a side who are particularly interested in Meslier. And obviously, at some point the goalkeeping situation is going to change there.”
The next Lloris
More than 10 years ago, Tottenham took a chance on a young French goalkeeper by the name of Hugo Lloris, and it’s fair to say that their gamble paid off.
Meslier may not be as established as Lloris was when Spurs signed him back in 2011, but there is reason to believe he could emulate the World Cup winning captain in the future.
Indeed, at such a young age Meslier has shown an incredible shot-stopping ability, being described as ‘unbelievable’ by Patrick Bamford in the past, and if the other areas of his game are fine-tuned, he could be a world class goalkeeper one day.
Replacing Lloris was always going to be a tough task for Tottenham, but if they get Meslier in, they may well have their number one set for another 10 years.
