Graeme Souness has told TalkSPORT (11.28AM, Monday) that Manchester United should consider a move for Aston Villa captain John McGinn this summer – a player that has attracted interest from Tottenham during this summer.

Manchester United were hammered 4-0 by Brentford on Saturday evening. A startling weakness in the United side was their midfield, with Erik Ten Hag replacing Fred at half-time with Scott McTominay. Adrien Rabiot is a target for United.

United, of course, are also targeting Frenkie de Jong but after summer-long saga, a move for the Dutchman looks unlikely. He is keen on staying at Barcelona, and the club still owe de Jong cash in unpaid wages.

Manchester United are yet to improve their midfield in terms of additions. Speaking on TalkSPORT on Monday, Souness claims Manchester United should consider a move for Villa skipper McGinn, instead.

The Scotland international has just been made captain of Aston Villa. It is likely to convince him to stay at Villa Park under Steven Gerrard, though Tottenham have shown interest in the £40million-rated ace.

“I’m thinking John McGinn. He would be a fabulous player for Manchester United. He is the kind of player that would get up and make that kind of tackle, make a challenge. They didn’t have that on the weekend,” Souness said.

Souness: Manchester United should consider McGinn

It would be a fantastic signing for Manchester United – but surely, there is no chance of it happening. Villa are an ambitious club. Although they have made an indifferent start to the season, they will be pushing for Europe.

They have the players to make it happen. So in realistic terms, they are not far off Manchester United, who will likely be in and around the top six. Of course, United are a much bigger club than Villa. But he is now Villa captain.

On paper, the tenacity and aggression of McGinn is something United lack. But it looks incredibly unlikely that he will be leaving Villa any time soon – especially, as he has a contract until the summer of 2025.
