Indian-born British-American novelist Salman Rushdie is in a critical condition after being stabbed multiple times in New York State.

The 75-year-old was speaking at an event at the Chautauqua Institution when a man ran on stage and attacked him, the BBC reports.

He underwent immediate surgery and was on a ventilator and there are now fears that he may lose an eye following the devastating attack.

At the time of writing this, no charges have been made. However, police have arrested a 24-year-old suspect from New Jersey.
