Amadou Onana represented a major positive for Everton against Aston Villa this afternoon.

Well, the Toffees still slumped to a defeat at Villa Park – their second from two Premier League games this season – but a cameo from the big midfielder on his debut was something to behold.

The 20-year-old conceded possession in a development which ultimately led to Aston Villa going 2-0 ahead through Emi Buendia.

However, the Everton midfielder, who only came on for his debut with 10 minutes remaining, made amends with a powerful run which led to Frank Lampard’s outfit pulling a goal back immediately, albeit off Lucas Digne.

It wasn’t enough for the Merseyside outfit to salvage a draw, but Onana certainly demonstrated his ability in the short time he had to do so.

Here’s what Kevin Campbell told BBC Sport about his brief performance: “Unbelievable from Onana. What an introduction. He seems lively. It’s going to be interesting now.”

Despite Onana’s first impression, there is a sense that Everton – who lost Richarlison – haven’t strengthened enough this summer.

Remember, this is an outfit who survived relegation from the Premier League by the very skin of their teeth last season and unless more additions are made, well you worry that Lampard’s side could seriously struggle again.
