Eddie Howe has offered an update on Jonjo Shelvey after the Newcastle United midfielder required surgery on an injury which will keep him on the sidelines for a number of months.

Eddie Howe admits Jonjo Shelvey ‘very disappointed’ after Newcastle ace’s injury

Jonjo Shelvey is ‘very disappointed’ after requiring surgery on his hamstring injury and will miss the next three months of games. But Eddie Howe still expects to name the Newcastle United midfielder in his 25-man Premier League squad, via quotes by The Northern Echo.

The Toon technician sustained his blow during the St James’ Park natives’ friendly against Benfica on July 26. Shelvey felt an issue in his hamstring, which did not regress and forced the 30-year-old to have an operation in London earlier in the week to repair the damage.

Reports by the Daily Mail claimed Shelvey had hoped the injury would not require surgery, and he would be available for Newcastle soon. But after seeing a specialist, it was decided that the operation was needed for the £12m arrival from Swansea City in 2016 to recover.

He is now facing a race to be fit for any Premier League fixtures before the 2022/23 term is paused for the World Cup in Qatar in November. A frustrating state for the six-time former England international, who sacrificed a holiday this summer to hit pre-season in top shape.

Premier League squad spot still up for grabs despite major summer setback

Shelvey is also just three games away from triggering a clause in his contract to extend his terms at Newcastle until 2024, per the Daily Mail. The Romford-born star is otherwise set to be a free agent at the end of the current season, in which he now faces a bit-part role.

Howe has not yet ruled Shelvey out of a position in the 25-man Newcastle squad that will tackle the first-half of the Premier League term, despite his injury. But he admits the £70k-a-week star is frustrated to have sustained such a major injury on the eve of the new season.

“It was quite a complex one,” Howe explained. “We had a number of scans and opinions because we wanted to make the right call. It wasn’t a clear or simple injury. He’s had an operation and is expected to be out [for] around 12 weeks.

“He was very disappointed, obviously, he worked very hard in pre-season and looked in really good physical shape. It was a real shame for him and for us, but he’s on the road to recovery now and is in a much better place after the operation mentally.”

The Magpies head coach added: “I’d say he’ll be in the squad, without giving 100 per cent guarantees, because we need to see how his rehab goes. If there’s a chance he’ll be back to play, which at the moment we think there is, he will be in that squad.”
