Atalanta’s Serie A veteran Remo Freuler will fly out to England on Thursday afternoon before sealing a £10 million move to Premier League newcomers Nottingham Forest, as reported by Tuttomercatoweb.
Heading into the final few weeks of the window, there are at least two positions Nottingham Forest are still hoping to strengthen; Central midfield and left-wing back.
The arrival of Switzerland international Freuler, then, feels like a classic case of killing two birds with one stone. Whether plying his trade as a deep-lying playmaker or pushing forward from the left-hand side, the versatile, highly-intelligent Freuler could perform both roles under Steve Cooper; All the while saving funds for further additions during a summer of change at the City Ground.
A new number nine, perhaps.
Remo Freuler on his way to Nottingham Forest from Serie A
After failing with a couple of initial offers, TMW reports that Nottingham Forest have now agreed a £10 million deal – plus bonuses – with Atalanta. Freuler will sign a three-year deal. One of Gian Piero Gasperini’s most trusted lieutenants will take home £30,000-a-week in the East Midlands.
The report even claims that Freuler will be in England on Thursday, presumably to undergo medical tests.
The 30-year-old joined Atalanta from Luzern back in 2016. He’s played a major role in La Dea’s remarkable transformation from mid-table also-rans into Champions League regulars. He has nearly 50 caps for his country too; Featuring for Switzerland at last summer’s European Championships.
It remains to be seen if Cooper plans to utilise Freuler – who averages more tackles per game than Joe Worrall and boasts a better pass completion rate than any of Forest’s regular starters – as a deep-lying midfielder or as a left-sided wing-back instead.
Forest missed out on their top wing-back target, Alex Moreno, this week.
Talks are now underway with Villarreal for Pervis Estupinan. Though it is not certain if the Colombian speedster would arrive instead of Freuler or alongside him.
