West Ham United are closing in on Borna Sosa – but there are lingering fears that he could end up leaving Stuttgart for Newcastle United instead.
The Hammers have added a left-sided player in Maxwel Cornet and he offers great versatility.
Left wing back, left wing, off the striker… Cornet could be used in various positions by boss David Moyes.
Cornet is unlikely to play as a left back in a flat back four though and with Arthur Masuaku gone, West Ham are seeking other options in that area.
Just as West Ham offload one Croatian ace in Nikola Vlasic, who is set to join Serie A side Torino, it looks like one could be coming in.
West Ham United are closing in on Borna Sosa
Croatian news outlet Index report that Sosa is closing in on a big move to West Ham.
It’s stated that Sosa’s agents have been in England for two days now and are trying to secure a deal with the Hammers.
The report notes that Stuttgart are so confident that Sosa is leaving that the Bundesliga side are eyeing up an unnamed Brazilian replacement.
West Ham are allegedly paying a fee of around €20million (£17million) for Sosa and a deal is moving closer and closer.
Yet the report does also add that Newcastle United have now become involved in the race to sign Sosa.
It’s suggested that Newcastle may even be willing to pay more than West Ham for Sosa, meaning West Ham may have reason to be fearful.
In our opinion though, it’s hard to see Newcastle moving for Sosa.
Newcastle have already bought a new left back this summer, making loanee Matt Targett’s move from Aston Villa permanent.
Spending £17million or even more on another left back just doesn’t make sense for Newcastle right now, and we would suggest that a move to West Ham is more sensible for the Croatian.
Sosa, 24, has been an assist machine for Stuttgart, racking up 23 in 83 games.
Sosa struck up a strong relationship with a giant striker in Sasa Kalajdzic, so maybe West Ham feel that he can do the same with new signing Gianluca Scamacca.
