Cody Gakpo joining Arsenal has been touted for a while but recent reports suggest that he’s keen to join Manchester United.

In any case, the PSV Eindhoven winger has been told that he’s not ready for a transfer to the Premier League.

Arsenal and Manchester United were both linked to the 23-year-old as recently as Sunday, though ESPN added on Tuesday that the attacker was interested in the prospect of playing at Old Trafford on a regular basis.

Problem is, he may not be good enough for either.

That’s certainly the view of one writer for De Telegraaf, who offered a scathing assessment of his performance last night.

The Eredivisie outfit crept into the Champions League playoff phase with an extra-time victory over Monaco.

Gakpo started the contest despite speculation about Arsenal and Manchester United swirling around.

Writing about the player, the Dutch outlet wrote: “It was striking that also a strong holder like Cody Gakpo was not in his normal way. Gakpo could not show for a moment in this match that he is ready for a transition to a top competition like the Premier League.”

With 21 goals from left midfield last season, Gakpo well and truly deserves the £40 million price-tag that he now has [The Daily Mail].

However, struggling in a Champions League qualifier is relatively ominous with regards to his ability to compete – and shine – in a competition as difficult as the Premier League is.

There’s no doubt that he’s a massive talent and one who’ll get better, but perhaps another season in the Eredivisie is necessary before any club spends major money on him.
