Just think of all the cases audiences may never have known about if it not for Netflix documentaries. The platform has offered subscribers so many non-fiction projects over the years, delving into true crime and beyond.
Just recently, we were given a thorough glimpse into a catastrophic music festival with Trainwreck: Woodstock 99 and the effects of Hunter Moore’s IsAnyoneUp site with The Most Hated Man On The Internet.
Now, a lens has been focused on the case of Anthony Templet in I Just Killed My Dad.
The three-episode limited series from Skye Borgman (Abducted In Plain Sight) looks into the death of Burt Templet, who was shot and killed by his 17-year-old son Anthony Templet in 2019. Anthony called the authorities and told the operator what he had done, opening up the question of why he did it.
However, we’re here to ask something else. Just who was Burt Templet, exactly?
Who was Burt Templet?
The 53-year-old from Louisiana was killed by his son Anthony Templet on June 3, 2019.
The pair had gotten into an argument over Anthony potentially having contact with Burt’s ex-wife, as reported by Fox8 Local First. Burt was shot three times and died three days later. However, I Just Killed My Dad delves into the life Anthony had, revealing details about his father that might explain such a violent act.
Looking at Burt’s history, the Radio Times reports he took Anthony from his home – they previously shared a house with Anthony’s mother and sister – in 2007 and kept him separated from the family until Burt’s death in 2019. The family claimed Burt physically and mentally abused his son.
In the documentary, Anthony claims he was “punched and thrown and kicked” by Burt, sometimes for hours at a time.
For many years Burt kept Anthony out of everybody’s company but his own, even ensuring he wasn’t able to go to school.
The Cinemaholic claims Burt was a heavy consumer of alcohol and cocaine. He also had a criminal history of assault charges dating to the 1990s. He was detained three times on physical assault counts between 2001 and 2002 in Texas, although two instances were dismissed. Burt also spent time in prison for assaulting his partner who was pregnant with Anthony at the time, according to the Netflix documentary.
‘My brave brother had to defend himself’
Anthony Templet’s sister Natasha spoke out about her brother after Burt’s death.
“After 11 years of waiting to hear if my brother was still alive, he is found,” she told WAFB. “He has been secluded and abused all these years by his own father. My brave brother had to defend himself for the last time against that evil man.”
She claimed there was violence in their home before Burt left with Anthony: “He snatched him from our home. Burt and my mom were together for about ten years and it was extremely violent.”
Did Anthony Templet go to jail?
No, The Cinemaholic reports Anthony was offered a negligent homicide plea to which he pled no contest to in early March 2021.
Ultimately, he received five years on probation with credit for time already served and an order to obtain a high-school diploma, attend counselling, and get a job or enter full-time education. He appears during interviews in the 2022 Netflix documentary.
I Just Killed My Dad is streaming exclusively on Netflix.
