The Mail claim Leeds United will complete their seventh summer signing on Monday in the form of goalkeeper Joel Robles. The Spanish goalkeeper is set to sign an initial one-year deal, and offer cover for Illan Meslier.

Robles, 32, is set to return to English football for his third club after previous spells with Everton and Wigan. He is a free agent after being released by Real Betis on a free transfer, having spent four years at the La Liga outfit, joining in 2018.

The Spain Under-23 international has only played 176 senior games during his career, often acting as a back-up goalkeeper. He has also played seven times for Atletico Madrid, keeping 25 clean sheets in 65 Everton games.

The Mail report that Robles will be confirmed by Leeds on Monday with a deal at an advanced stage. He will sign a one-year deal, with a view to extending that deal. He could be on the bench against Southampton his weekend.

It is a sensible signing for Leeds. Jesse Marsch has spoken in the past at concentrating on the type of person and personality they are bringing in at Elland Road. Robles’ career shows he has a good attitude and will not kick up a fuss.

Leeds have Meslier, who is the undoubted no.1 and a potential France goalkeeper in the future. But he is still only 22. Kristoffer Klaesson turns 22 in November, and has only played for Leeds in the senior side, joining the club in 2020.

So, adding an experienced goalkeeper to give Leeds not only another option, but experience behind the scenes is key. Robles does that, without the need of having to spend any extra cash. A smart, but necessary signing for Leeds.
