Arsenal suddenly have serious competition for Cody Gakpo in the form of Manchester United.

According to The Mirror on Saturday, the Red Devils’ boss Erik ten Hag is interested in bringing the Dutch winger – valued at £40 million – to Old Trafford.

In the report, Arsenal are mentioned as a potential destination.

However, the truth is that it’s been a long time since something credible emerged linking the Gunners.

Back in April, the North Londoners were reportedly in talks with PSV Eindhoven about signing the 23-year-old [The Daily Mail].

Since then, there hasn’t been a whole lot of constant speculation about him heading to the Emirates Stadium, the volume of rumours which preceded, say, Gabriel Jesus’s arrival for instance.

So, is Gakpo even a target? Well, yes.

That’s according to Ryan Taylor of The Express, who told Give Me Sport that Arsenal do remain interested in signing the wide man.

He said: “I know fans are itching to hear names, but there isn’t really any out there that you can categorically say: ‘he is a target for Arsenal.’ I think it’s a case of looking at several options, Gakpo being one.”

Is Cody Gakpo to Arsenal plausible?

Well, yes and no.

Mikel Arteta and Edu will be hoping to offload Nicolas Pepe, with the Ivory Coast international having virtually no future in North London.

And if that happens between now and September, Arsenal, who haven’t signed a senior winger this summer, will need a replacement.

And somebody like Gakpo just might fit the bill.

Then again, this is someone who will cost in the region of £40 million, so whether Arteta and Edu are prepared to push the boat out remains to be seen.
