Mikel Arteta has reserved praise for Ben White following his performance at right-back in Arsenal’s victory on Friday.

The Gunners announced their Premier League campaign with a strong 2-0 win away to Crystal Palace.

William Saliba posted a man-of-the-match display in central defence on what was his long-awaited competitive debut for Arsenal, whom he joined three years ago.

As a result of his starting berth, Arteta had to use White in an unfamiliar right-back role.

However, the Spanish manager was full of praise for his £50 million signing from last summer, claiming he has the ‘capacity’ to impress in a number of different roles.

He told Football London: “He’s done really well. We know individually when you are so tight with him how difficult it is to win the ball from him, he upsets you, the way he tries to play the game is really tricky and we have to discuss. Ben has the capacity to play in different positions and that’s a big plus for any player and he really likes playing there.”

Gary Neville said before the Arsenal victory that Saliba had already achieved something by virtue of the fact that someone like Ben White was being shifted into a different position to accomodate him.

And he’s right.

This is a massive feather in Saliba’s cap and it’ll be fascinating to see what happens when Takehiro Tomiyasu returns from injury, which could be as early as next week.
