Any Tottenham Hotspur supporter who dabbles in conspiracy might be interested in one potentially interesting development.

Speculation is rife that Spurs boss Antonio Conte wants to see Roma attacker Nicolo Zaniolo come to North London this summer.

It was reported last weekend that Tottenham would use a pre-season friendly against Jose Mourinho’s side to hold talks about signing the Italy international.

And earlier on Friday, Alfredo Pedulla claimed that the Italian outfit’s director Tiago Pinto could hold further talks with the Lilywhites, this time in London.

Tottenham released their squad numbers for the 2022-23 campaign today.

And interestingly, the number 22 shirt – as worn by Zaniolo in Serie A – is vacant.

This, combined with the increasing speculation about the 23-year-old being signed, makes this quite an interesting development and it’ll be fascinating to see if the two things are linked.

Conte and Fabio Paratici have already overseen a brilliant transfer window, puncuated by a £60 million deal to sign Richarlison.

Zaniolo would set them back a further £42 million but the Italian manager is on record as saying that business during the final month of the window is possible, should the right player become available.

Whether Zaniolo is the right player remains to be seen, but we do know the same number he wears at Roma is free at Tottenham and time will tell whether there’s a correlation here.

Here is a list of the North Londoners’ confirmed squad numbers this season [official website].
