Nicole Hazen dies at 45

Nicole Hazen has passed away at the age of 45 after complications of brain tumor. She was diagnosed with glioblastoma in July 2020, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer.

Nicole underwent a surgery and a six-week cycle of chemotherapy and radiation after her diagnosis.

Her family said in a statement: “Nicole lived her life and loved her family with fierceness and devotion. She spent every day in the service of others as a mother, wife and educator advocating for goodness.”

The statement continued: “From our family, we remain forever grateful for the love, support and random acts of kindness bestowed upon us for the last two years and four months. We would not have been able to walk down this road, with her, without the help and generosity of our community. Glioblastoma slowly took her capacity to speak, walk, talk and lead but never took her capacity to love her children, family and friends.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mile, their four sons, and extended family,” Arizona Diamondbacks said in a touching tribute.

A look into their family life

Nicole, who was born Nicole Marie Ferrara, grew up in Cleveland and met Mike when he was working as an assistant for the Cleveland Indians. He spent five seasons with the team.

After tying the knot, Nicole and Mike moved to Boston where he took a job with Red Sox.

They later moved to Phoenix, Arizona for Mike’s job with the Diamondbacks baseball team. Nicole took a teaching role at the school St. Francis Xavier.

The school principal Ryan Watson remembered Nicole as an “absolutely treasured faculty member.”

Watson said: “Just the amount of sheer toughness — mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually — just her toughness and her grit, that was the example she wanted to set for her students. It was unparalleled.”

Tributes paid to Nicole

The sports community and Diamondbacks fans are mourning Nicole’s death and many have paid touching tributes on social media.

“The Texas Rangers organization sends our deepest condolences to Mike Hazen and his family and the entire D-backs organization on the passing of Nicole Hazen,” Texas Rangers wrote in a Twitter post.

Another emotional tribute read: “I heard Mike Hazen speak movingly about Nicole’s bravery and strength, earlier this year, at a @BrophyNews event. My condolences to the Hazen family and the Diamondbacks organization. RIP.”

“My heart is broken. Nicole was the sweetest soul and a smile that would light up any room she walked into,” someone else wrote. “My thoughts and prayers to the Hazen family.”

In 2021, Arizona Diamondbacks launched the Nicole Hazen Fund for Hope to raise funds for cancer research.
