Blackburn Rovers teenager Ashley Phillips is reportedly a target for Tottenham this summer – but Jon Dahl Tomasson has looked to end speculation over his future, by stating he could be about to sign a new contract.

England Under-17 international Phillips is yet to feature for Blackburn’s senior side, but that is likely to change this summer. He has been a regular in the Under-21 side already, scoring two goals in 11 appearances.

Phillips is out of contract at the end of the season. Reports claim that Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United are all showing interest in the 17-year-old defender, with a fee of £3million said to be enough to tempt Blackburn.

But Blackburn boss Tomasson has commented on the future of Phillips. He says that talks between the club and Phillips’ entourage has been “very good”. A new deal for Phillips at Blackburn could be forthcoming.

“The club is having a good conversation with the players, the family and the agent. It is an ongoing process, they have very good contact. He’s a young lad who just became 17 and he is massive.

“Clubs in England, when you play for England youth games you become quite interesting. There are ongoing conversations with the family and the club,” Phillips told Lancashire Live, when asked about Phillips’ future.

What is encouraging for Tottenham fans – and that of Chelsea and Manchester United – is that while all three clubs continue to add to their senior sides, they are still looking to improve the Under-21 side.

They are willing to spend money on potential stars, even at the age of 17. But it might be that that they have to continue watching from a distance, if Blackburn can get a deal over the line in the coming weeks.
