Everton are closing in on a deal to re-sign Idrissa Gana Gueye from Paris Saint-Germain just three years after the Senegal midfielder left Goodison Park to join the Ligue 1 powerhouse.

Everton now on verge of re-signing Idrissa Gueye from Paris Saint-Germain

Idrissa Gana Gueye is on the verge of re-signing for Everton after the Toffees agreed a deal with Paris Saint-Germain, according to TuttoMercatoWEB. The switch will see the Senegal star return to Goodison Park after three seasons away to improve Frank Lampard’s squad.

Lampard has chased a deal for the 32-year-old as he bids to strengthen his engine room on Merseyside. Gueye emerged as one of the Premier League’s best midfield anchors through his three campaigns in royal blue, in which he enjoyed 108 games with 99 in the top-flight.

Ronald Koeman originally signed Gueye off Aston Villa in 2016 for £7m as he capitalised on the Villans’ relegation to the Championship. The Toffees investment would, eventually, net them a sizeable profit in 2019, with PSG swooping to secure his services in a £30m switch.

Most of the fee Marco Silva received for Gueye’s departure the Portuguese put toward the £25m arrival of Jean-Philippe Gbamin from FSV Mainz. But the Ivory Coast enforcer failed to establish himself as the solution, having endured a nightmare run of injuries in England.

Idrissa Gueye set for similar salary to midfielder’s first Goodison Park stint

Now, Lampard is on the cusp of re-signing Gueye with PSG accepting a €5m (£4m) bid from Everton. The Toffees have also offered the 94-cap enforcer a €4m-a-season (£65k-a/w) net salary. Their offer is almost the same as the £70k-a-week deal he had during his first spell.

Lampard will hope Gueye can recapture the same sort of form the midfielder displayed in his first Merseyside adventure. Former teammate Morgan Schneiderlin was a huge fan of the Senegal anchor while they shared space in the engine room at Goodison Park in 2019.

“Gana is just amazing in what he does,” Schneiderlin told the Toffees’ website. “In games and in training, he has added a new dimension to his game.

“Before you could see his main point was getting the ball back. But now, he likes to drive forward with the ball and take people on. He is using all his qualities now. You can see he is full of confidence, his passing is very good and the way he recovers possession, too.

“We get on well on the pitch and off the pitch. It is a pleasure for me to play alongside him.”
