Movies being canceled is nothing new. In fact, some of the most promising and intriguing blockbusters are ones that never reached screens, whether we’re talking about Neill Blomkamp’s Alien project or Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4.

Some come closer to completion than others, and Batgirl is destined to be remembered as a film that got so incredibly close to reaching fans.

Alas, Deadline reports that the forthcoming film has been canceled by Warner Bros, who pulled the plug on the project as it neared completion. It was directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life) and starred Leslie Grace (In the Heights) as the titular Barbara Gordon.

With news that it won’t be released in theaters or on HBO Max, audiences have taken the time to contemplate what could have been. Some have focused on the fact that Batgirl featured a transgender actress in a trans role…

Who was the transgender character in Batgirl?

Looking back, Variety reported in January 2022 that Batgirl would feature the openly transgender character Alysia Yeoh.

Alysia made her DC Comics debut in a 2011 issue of Batgirl written by Gail Simone. She has been a roommate and best friend to Barbara. The pair met when Barbara moved out and answered an ad on “Greg’s List” for a roommate. Alysia explained that she paints by day and is a bartender by night.

DC Fandom reports that Gail once shared on Twitter that Alysia was going to temporarily replace Barbara Gordon as Batgirl after she was injured by Nightfall. However, it never materialized.

Nevertheless, the pair got along famously and the character would have been Barbara’s roommate in the now-canceled Batgirl film.

This could have made history, as Alysia would have been the first openly trans character in a DC Comics film adaptation.

Ivory Aquino was cast as Alysia Yeoh

Alysia would have been portrayed by trans actress Ivory Aquino.

The 42-year-old Filipina-American star has previously starred in such movies as Lingua Franca (she played Lea) and Lapsis (Jo).

On the other hand, TV roles include City on a Hill (Lourdes), Blue Bloods (Ashley Roberts), FBI: Most Wanted (Cassie), Tales of the City (Doctor Perez), When They See Us (Ms Baqri), and When We Rise (Cecilia Chung).

Her co-star Leslie Grace recently extended her gratitude and support for Alysia and surrounding cast members in a Tweet:

“I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over 7 months in Scotland. I feel blessed to have worked among absolute greats and forged relationships for a lifetime in the process!”

She added: “To every Batgirl fan – thank you for the love and belief, allowing me to take on the cape and become, as Babs said best, ‘my own damn hero!'”
