Meet Bibi’s hippo baby at Cincinnati Zoo

Cincinnati Zoo’s hippo Bibi has given birth to her second baby at 10 pm on Wednesday, August 3rd, the zoo announced in a press release.

Earlier this year, zoo members confirmed that Bibi is pregnant with her second baby while she was on birth control.

The announcement was made around April Fool’s Day this year and some people initially thought that it was a joke.

“The appearance of a healthy, full-term hippo baby last night around 10 p.m. confirms that a) the hippo team was not joking, and b) baby hippos are adorable!” the zoo said in its release.

Zoo celebrates the baby’s arrival

The zoo staff celebrated the hippo baby’s arrival and released a statement in its media release.

Cincinnati Zoo’s director of animal care Christina Gorsuch said: “This calf looks huge to us because Fiona, Bibi’s first baby, only weighed 29 pounds when she was born six weeks premature and wasn’t able to stand on her own. This new calf weighs at least twice as much as Fiona did and is already walking.

“We’re not sure if nursing has occurred yet because the water is murky. It’s Bibi’s first time nursing, since Fiona had to be cared for by the hippo staff, so we’re keeping a close eye on them to make sure we don’t need to step in.”

How to see them

Bibi and its baby will not be visible to the public right away, the Zoo said in its press release. But photos and videos are available on social media and the zoo’s website.

Tucker and Fiona can be found in their outdoor habitat as usual except during key introduction times.

Guests have access to live cameras in the outdoor habitat and can watch the action in Hippo Cove from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm every day. Guests can also access live hippo cameras through Virtual Members.
