If James Maddison to Newcastle United doesn’t materialise this summer, it could ‘definitely’ happen in the January transfer window.

That is according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who has told Give Me Sport that the Magpies could finally get their man early in 2023 if it doesn’t pan out this time around.

Maddison remains heavily linked with a move to Newcastle, who have seen two offers rejected by Leicester City.

The Foxes are reportedly holding out for an eye-watering £60 million.

Here’s what O’Rourke has said: “Yeah, that’s a possibility depending on how the season is going for the two clubs. If Leicester aren’t having a great season and Newcastle are doing well, I’m sure it’s something that they would definitely look to revisit.”

Newcastle are clearly serious about signing the England international.

After all, United’s most recent effort was around £50 million and maybe, just maybe, a compromise could be made if Maddison decides that he wants out of The King Power Stadium.

If that is the case, it puts a little more pressure on Brendan Rodgers and co and perhaps a settlement of £55 million could be arranged, in theory.

Newcastle are tipped to be dark horses during the forthcoming Premier League campaign but you feel that they need additional recruitment.

Sven Botman, a centre-back, is their only eye-catching signing of a summer that’s also seen Eddie Howe welcome Matt Target and Nick Pope, the former of whom joined on loan in January.

Howe desperately needs additional attackers and, crucially, players like Maddison who can create chances for the more advanced players.

So although renewed interest in January is possible, it wouldn’t be a major surprise if Newcastle decide to wrap this up here and now instead of waiting six months.
