Naby Keita‘s Liverpool contract looks in the process of being solved.
The former Red Bull Leipzig midfielder is only contracted to the Reds for another 11 months.
With his contract expiring next summer, Liverpool need to make a decision on the star as soon as possible.
And according to Fabrizio Romano, ‘preliminary negotiations’ have already taken place with regards to a new deal.
He told Caught Offside: “One of the next players to sign a new contract at Liverpool may be Naby Keita. There have been preliminary negotiations with his representatives, but they are not yet at the final stage.
“Jota was a priority, after bringing in Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. Liverpool wanted to ensure him he was still a valued member of the squad.”
Liverpool have only just signed up Diogo Jota to new terms, following his brilliant two-year spell at Anfield.
And although Keita – a £52 million signing – has had brilliant moments too, there’s no doubt that the Guinea international has also struggled with injury for much of his four-year stint on Merseyside.
Last season, however, was an excellent one in terms of fitness and regular football.
And signing him up to a new contract absolutely makes sense.
Remember, despite his injury woes, Keita is still only 27.
By next summer he’ll be 28 and into the prime of his career and it’d be an enormous shame if Liverpool were to lose a player in his peak on a Bosman.
However, going by Romano’s comments, things won’t progress to that level and hopefully for the Reds’ sake, the Italian journalist is right.
