Tottenham wanted Abdou Diallo but he could now head to AC Milan at the expense of Spurs defender Japhet Tanganga.

Tottenham went into the summer window wanting to sign a new left-sided centre back to bolster Antonio Conte’s options.

High-profile targets like Josko Gvardiol, Alessandro Bastoni and Pau Torres were all linked but proved to be beyond Tottenham.

Clement Lenglet arrived on loan from Barcelona instead, and he was picked ahead of Paris Saint-Germain defender Diallo.

Tottenham wanted Abdou Diallo

Reports from RMC Sport claimed that Tottenham actually wanted to sign Diallo as their new left-sided centre back.

However, PSG demanded €30million (£25million) for Diallo and Tottenham simply felt that such a deal was too expensive.

Tottenham then turned to a loan deal for Lenglet instead, leaving Diallo stranded at PSG without much chance for first-team action.

A new suitor has emerged for Diallo though – and will have an impact on a Tottenham player.

Alessio Romagnoli has left the club for Lazio this summer and Milan now want a new left-sided defender to replace him.

Diallo is the new priority for Milan and it’s stated that he is now above Japhet Tanganga on their wish list.

Reports last week suggested that Tanganga was very close to join Milan on loan with an option to buy, whilst Tottenham would hold a buy-back option.

Yet with no deal done, Milan have started to look at alternatives and Diallo now looks more likely to join than Tanganga.

That’s a blow for Tanganga, who needs first-team football and isn’t likely to land it with Tottenham this season, but also for Spurs themselves, who were looking to strike a deal.

Football works in mysterious ways at times, and Tottenham backing away from Diallo only for him to scupper Tanganga’s exit would be a strange twist of fate.
