According to talkSPORT, Newcastle are now set to sign Everton and Nottingham Forest target Maxwel Cornet from Burnley.

What’s the story?

Well, the £44,000-a-week man has a £17.5m release clause in his contract at Turf Moor, which became active after the Clarets suffered relegation from the Premier League.

Now, the Magpies are ready to trigger that clause, in a move which will surely frustrate Frank Lampard and Steve Cooper.

It was said that Nottingham Forest submitted a bid for Cornet, while Everton also made an offer for the Ivory Coast international.

Unfortunately for the Toffees and the Championship play-off final winners, it seems they will now have to start looking elsewhere for attacking reinforcements.

Cornet’s expected move to Newcastle comes after he impressively scored nine Premier League goals for Burnley in what was his debut campaign in English football.

To hit that tally, in a relegated side who hardly play the most attacking football, speaks volumes about his ability.

West Ham have also expressed an interest in Cornet.

Newcastle beating Everton & Nottingham Forest to a smart signing

In our view, this should be a no-brainer for Eddie Howe.

Cornet shone in a very defensive system last term, so with better players around him such as Allan Saint-Maximin and Bruno Guimaraes, we believe he can hit double figures from the wing.

A frontline of Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson and Cornet is surely going to cause opponents huge problems, to say the least.

Furthermore, the Ivorian played with Bruno at Lyon, so the Brazilian can help him settle in on Tyneside.

The pair shared a pitch together on 39 occasions, helping Lyon pick up 1.74 points per game in that time.

With all things considered, we cannot see this move failing for Newcastle.

Keep an eye on this situation, as we believe the deal will progress quite quickly once the release clause is triggered.
