Speaking on the Tottenham Fan Chris Cowlin YouTube channel, Graham Roberts has been discussing Harry Winks as he edges towards a Spurs exit.
The midfielder was left behind as Tottenham jetted off to South Korea for pre-season, and it looks as though he’s very much surplus to requirements in north London these days.
Winks will likely be leaving the club in the coming weeks, and Roberts says he can’t help but feel sorry for the 26-year-old.
The pundit says that Winks has regressed as a player, stating that he only passes backwards these days, despite being a rather creative midfielder when he first broke into the team.
What’s been said?
Roberts spoke about Winks.
“Winks, I feel sorry for Harry Winks because when he got in the team he was passing the ball forwards. All of a sudden in the last few years he’s been getting it, giving to the centre-half, getting it back and giving it to the other centre-half. The game is about going forward not backwards. People say to me that Winks has like 340 touches in a game, but they’re all to the centre-halves. You have to be more expansive. I feel sorry for him but would we win a trophy with Winks in the team? Not really,” Roberts said.

Lost his confidence
Roberts says that Winks has stopped passing the ball forwards, and we can’t help but feel that this is down to a lack of confidence.
The midfielder burst onto the scene as a youngster and made a real impact as a progressive player who liked to drive from deep.
However, it’s been years since we’ve seen Winks play in that way, and nowadays, he often goes for the safer option.
The talent is in there somewhere, but Winks isn’t willing to take as many risks anymore.
Perhaps a change of scenery would see the England international get back to his best.
