Chelsea are now reportedly monitoring Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, a player both Manchester United and Tottenham are interested in signing this summer.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the west London side are keeping tabs on the Netherlands international as Inter weigh up the prospect of selling Dumfries just one year after signing the 26-year-old right-back from PSV Eindhoven, with interest mounting in the dynamic fullback.
As per the report, Inter need to make up about €60m (£55m) in player sales this summer, something the Serie A giants thought they were going to receive from PSG for Milan Skriniar, though that deal now looks to have fallen through despite intense links between the French champions and the Slovakian international.
Now, Inter are warming to the idea of selling Dumfries, who according to recent reports is wanted by Tottenham and United, with Chelsea now in the race to sign the right-back, who Inter could allow to leave this summer for around €40m (£34m).
One of Europe’s most enjoyable fullbacks and hailed by Ally McCoist as ‘amazing to watch’, Dumfries impressed in his first year with Inter, but with the club’s financial problems continuing to mount, the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham could take advantage of this situation by trying to sign Dumfries.
Indeed, with the defender now 26, Dumfries is hitting the prime of his career as a fullback, and signing for a top Premier League club would be a logical step in the Dutchman’s short-term future, especially with Chelsea now interested despite Tottenham and United eyeing the Inter star.
Chelsea can blow Tottenham and United out the water to sign Dumfries
Chelsea might not need a new starting right-back given how incredible Reece James has been in the past 12 months when fully fit, but a solid backup option in Dumfries could be a smart signing for Thomas Tuchel and it could deny an English rival in Tottenham or United from landing the defender.
After all, Chelsea’s form in pre-season has shown obvious cracks in the squad, and Todd Boehly can work wonders if he works fast in the coming weeks to plug some key holes, such as solid backup for James, which signing Dumfries would achieve and then some.
