Premier League champions Manchester City have registered their interest in signing Tottenham Hotspur target Ronnie Edwards, Peterborough United’s director of football Barry Fry tells the Peterborough Telegraph.

Never one to keep his cards close to his chest, this is not the first time Fry has spoken publicly about interest from above.

Spurs, he said a couple of months ago, have been scouting Edwards ‘for a long time’. As have what Fry refers to as a ‘big German club’ with a track record for signing young English footballers.

Borussia Dortmund anyone?

Now, it’s the turn of Manchester City to have their interest in one of the EFL’s most exciting young defenders placed firmly in the public domain.

Manchester City make Ronnie Edwards approach

“City did make a phone call about him, but it was just a conversation,” Fry says, before indicating that Edwards has little interest in joining a club unable to offer him regular first-team football.

“There has been interest all summer long in Ronnie. But he would rather play in League One than in City’s, or any other club’s, under 21 side.

“There is no doubt he will get to the Premier League one day and earn life-changing money. But he’s a very sensible young man and knows time is on his side.

“I suppose an ideal scenario would be a club paying proper money for him and then loaning him back to us for a season.”

Fry has already indicated that any club hoping to lure 19-year-old Edwards away from London Road would have to make the teenager the most expensive export in Peterborough’s history. He is reportedly valued in the region of £15 million.

Not that Edwards has any plans to force through a summer departure, despite Peterborough’s relegation from the Championship in April.

“Ronnie has three years left on his contract with us,” Fry adds. “He’s happy here and he’s looking forward to playing regular first-team football for us next season. There has been no attempt by Ronnie or his representatives to get a move.”
