Viewers with a penchant for fantasy are about to be spoiled rotten in Q3 2022, as Amazon Prime welcomes The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and HBO Max debuts Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon.

As it is firmly rooted in the Game of Thrones universe, fans of the franchise are interested to know when in the timeline House of the Dragon takes place and we confirm if the series is a prequel.

Created by Ryan J. Condal and Game of Thrones author Geroge R. R. Martin, the fantasy drama House of the Dragon will follow the events of Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood, starring Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Milly Alcock, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and more.

Is House of the Dragon a prequel?

Yes, House of the Dragon is a prequel to the Game of Thrones series and will follow House Targaryen – Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestors.

The events of the series are based on George R. R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood from the series A Song of Ice and Fire, depicting the history of House Targaryen.

Plot points that could be adapted from the book include Aegon I Targaryen’s reign after his conquest of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the Dance of the Dragons – a civil war between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon with the throne in sight.

Game of Thrones timeline

Much of the Game of Thrones timeline exists in two sections: Before Aegon I Targaryen’s Conquest of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros (BC) and after (AC).

Going by the aforementioned layout, House of the Dragon is set in the year 129 AC after Aegon’s conquest and at the beginning of the Dance of Dragons.

House of the Dragon takes place 127 years after the Valyrian family began taking control in the year 2 BC, and we also know that the Game of Thrones narrative began in 298 AC.

This means that House of the Dragon is set nearly 170 years before Games of Thrones Season 1.

Fans react to the House of the Dragon trailer

The first trailer for House of the Dragon released by HBO Max has certainly turned a few heads and scratched that Game of Thrones itch we’ve needed since 2019.

A lot of praise from the fandom was offered to the visuals featured in the trailer and the beauty shown within House Targaryen.
