After a stunning 2021/22 campaign, Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby has attracted interest from Arsenal and Newcastle this summer.
It was said that Newcastle felt confident about signing the France international, and the Magpies even submitted a £30m bid, which was rejected by the Bundesliga side.
Arsenal also expressed an interest, although they did not submit an offer of their own.
Now, however, both Eddie Howe and Mikel Arteta will have to go back to the drawing board, as it seems Diaby is going nowhere this summer.
What’s the story?
Well, the 23-year-old has decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.
Speaking to RP, the Parisian said: “I’ve made my decision and will play for Bayer Leverkusen again next season.”
There you have it.
Barring any late shocks, it seems Diaby will be spending the 2022/23 season in Germany once again, where he is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the most dangerous forwards in the country.
The Bayer Leverkusen No.19 also spoke to RP about becoming a father in 2020 – with such a young family, we presume he wouldn’t want to cause any upheaval.
Interest in Diaby comes after he impressively scored 17 goals in 42 appearances last season, while also providing 14 assists.
Arsenal & Newcastle must stay alert
In our view, Arsenal and Newcastle must continue to track Diaby, despite being unlikely to secure his signature this summer.
As aforesaid, the £48,000-a-week man recorded 31 goal involvements last season, which is a freakish tally, while he is surely going to get even better with plenty of time on his side aged just 23.
Additionally, Diaby has already won eight caps for France – arguably the most talented footballing nation around right now – which is no easy thing to do given the attacking talent at Didier Deschamps’ disposal.
They may not get him this year, but Arteta and Howe must keep tabs on the French sensation.
