Speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, Dean Jones has been discussing Newcastle’s desire to add a new midfielder to their squad.
The Magpies’ midfield three towards the end of last season was incredible. Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton were unplayable at times, and one more addition in that area would give the Tyneside club one of the most fearsome midfields in England.
According to Jones, Newcastle will probably sign a new midfielder this summer, stating that Boubacar Traore and Seko Fofana are two players the Tyneside club are keen on.

Jones spoke about Newcastle wanting a new midfielder.
“The other position to look out for is that they will probably sign another centre-midfielder. They’re trying to find the right profile of player that fits. Boubacar Traore is a young central midfielder that has been linked, while there’s a guy at Lens, Seko Fofana, he’s somebody that is on their radar,” Jones said.
Important addition
A lot of transfer speculation surrounding Newcastle in recent weeks has been about their pursuit of a new striker, but adding a new midfielder is equally as important.
With all due respect, you’re not going to challenge at the top-end of the Premier League table with a player like Jonjo Shelvey starting every week, and someone like Fofana would be a massive upgrade on Shelvey.
Described as ‘incredible’ in the past, Fofana was one of the better midfielders in Ligue 1 last year, and he has the potential to work incredibly well alongside both Joelinton and Guimaraes.
As for Traore, at the age of 20, he’d be more of one for the future, but under the tutelage of Eddie Howe, there’s reason to believe he could develop into a star at St James’ Park.
