St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson has warned Dylan Reid against leaving the Scottish Premiership outfit after Celtic had a bid accepted, speaking to Sky Sports.

Now, Robinson has a point.

First-team opportunities are obviously going to be easier to come by in Paisley for a teenager who became the youngest debutant in St Mirren’s history at the age of just 16. That almost goes without saying.

But then again, a move to one of the Old Firm giants represents the pinnacle of any young Scot’s career. And Reid, long before his 18th birthday, may soon find himself continuing his rapid-fire progress at a Celtic side who cantered to the title last season, and under a coach in Ange Postecoglou’s who’s penchant for player development is almost legendary.

The Herald say that Celtic have had a £125,000 bid accepted. There is still a chance that Rangers – another of Reid’s admirers – will match that offer. But, as things stand, the Scotland U17 captain appears to be on his way to Glasgow’s East End.

Robinson is yet to accept defeat, however, as he looks to keep Reid at St Mirren for at least another year.

Will Dylan Reid leave St Mirren for Celtic?

“Obviously we are a club which has to develop players and has to sell,” says the former Motherwell boss. “We believe Dylan is a highly rated young talent that we can develop here.

“We are a club which produces players, an academy system which does develop players. There are no fewer than six young kids training with us at the moment. For me, it is a very good club for young players to develop.

“Dylan and his advisers and his family have some decisions to make. But I don’t think he needs to look too much further than here to develop.”

Reid started three league games for St Mirren in 2021/22. He even played the full 90 minutes in a goalless draw with Celtic in the spring. More opportunities, you would imagine, would be forthcoming if he stays put.

Postecoglou has already indicated that the Ayrshire-born kid would have to be content with reserve-team football if he follows Alexandro Bernabei and Benjamin Siegrist to Parkhead.

“I think that’s more for our B team and academy,” Postecoglou told The Sun when quizzed about Reid.
