According to AS, Leeds are interested in signing Juan Mata, a player who Gary Lineker thinks very highly of.
What’s the story?
Well, this would be quite the signing by Jesse Marsch.
Leeds have already enjoyed an excellent summer in the transfer market, signing the likes of Luis Sinisterra, Tyler Adams, Marc Roca, Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen.
However, the signing of Mata would probably top them all, in terms of the Spaniard’s reputation and pedigree.
The 34-year-old left Manchester United at the start of July after his contract expired, following eight years at Old Trafford.
Now, AS believe Marsch wants Mata at Leeds, with a deal looking relatively straightforward given the fact he is a free agent.
The Spain international made just 12 appearances in his final season at Manchester United, although we believe Lineker would approve of Leeds signing him based on comments made in the past.

Speaking about Mata on BBC Match of the Day back in 2017, the 61-year-old said: “I met him the other day. I spent a bit of time with him for an interview for the Premier League show, which I think goes out a week on Thursday. He’s a delightful chap and a lovely footballer.”
By the sounds of it, Leeds wouldn’t just be getting a fine footballer, but also a friendly character.
Juan Mata would improve Leeds
If Victor Orta can agree a deal which makes financial sense for Leeds, we see no reason why a move for Mata wouldn’t be a success.
The attacking midfielder boasts tremendous experience, having won the World Cup, European Championships and also the Champions League, across 630 appearances at the highest level.

Mata may not be able to play on a weekly basis for Leeds given his age, although his experience in the dressing room would prove vital to Marsch, while he has more than enough quality to make an impact when called upon.
Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as this would be a very interesting signing for Leeds.
