According to UOL, Arsenal are the most likely destination for Lyon star Lucas Paqueta, with Edu working on a deal.

What’s the story?

Well, after seeing a move for Raphinha collapse, Mikel Arteta has seemingly turned his attention to another Brazil international.

UOL believe the Gunners have approved a move for Paqueta internally, and have now begun their pursuit of the 24-year-old, who Edu is said to know well.

The Brazilian news outlet believe Arsenal’s Director of Football has already spoken to the attacking midfielder on the phone, and now, financial discussions are taking place with Lyon.

UOL are claiming that the north Londoners feel Lyon’s €60m (£51m) asking price is too high, and are working to negotiate a lower sum with the Ligue 1 side.

However, Lyon are standing firm, and feel Paqueta is worth that amount due to the fact he has three years remaining on his contract, and was also voted Best Foreign Player in France for his efforts last season.

The South American impressively scored 11 goals in 43 appearances last term, while also providing seven assists.

Paqueta’s form has also attracted interest from Newcastle, who are supposedly willing to smash their club-record transfer fee to sign the £49,000-a-week man.

Arsenal shouldn’t break the bank for Lucas Paqueta

In our view, if Edu cannot force Lyon to lower their asking price, then Arsenal should walk away from this deal.

Admittedly, Paqueta is a brilliant player, although we’re not sure if he’s necessary at the moment.

In our view, his arrival would be the definition of a luxury signing.

Arteta has already added another attacking midfielder to his ranks in Fabio Vieira, who is set to share those duties behind the striker with Martin Ødegaard and Emile Smith Rowe.

Therefore, we’re not quite sure where another attacking midfielder would fit, unless Arteta plans to use some players in different areas next season.

Whatever happens, it seems Arsenal are serious about signing Paqueta, so keep an eye on the situation.
