Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United and Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are now actively looking to sign Dries Mertens on a free transfer this summer, according to Il Mattino.

Leeds and Newcastle getting serious about Dries Mertens

Il Mattino have reported that Leeds and Newcastle are beginning to investigate the possibility of signing former Napoli star Mertens in the summer transfer window.

Marseille are also claimed to be interested in securing the services of the Belgium international forward this summer.

It was in June when Belgian outlet Voetbal Flitsen reported that Leeds, Newcastle and Crystal Palace all were interested in the 35-year-old, who could not agree on a new contract with Napoli before his deal ran out at the end of last month.

Il Mattino‘s report suggests that Leeds and Newcastle are now starting to get serious about signing Mertens.

One to avoid?

In our opinion, Leeds United and Newcastle United should avoid signing Dries Mertens in the summer transfer window.

Yes, Mertens is a free agent, but he is unlikely to settle for a one-year contract and is also likely to demand a sizeable salary.

Would it prudent of Leeds or Newcastle to hand a 35-year-old a two or a three-year contract?

One thing you have to say about Mertens, though, is that he is a very good attacking player who did well for Napoli last season.

The Belgian made 16 starts and 14 substitute appearances in Serie A for Napoli last season.

Mertens, who can play out wide or in attacking midfield as well, scored 11 goals and gave one assist in those games.
