West Ham can make bargain £4m signing, target won’t extend contract

West Ham United have made an offer for Jordan Torunarigha and the defender is now reluctant to extend his Hertha Berlin contract amid interest from the Premier League club, as reported by the Berliner Zeitung. 

Remember, two years ago, when Hammers fans were scratching their head in confusion as Craig Dawson arrived from relegated West Bromwich Albion?

Well, that is worth considering as the Europa League semi-finalists step up their interest in a 24-year-old defender who’s reputation has taken a beating during a dismal couple of years for Hertha Berlin. 

West Ham obviously see something in Torunarigha. And, to be fair, David Moyes has a track record when it comes to rescuing talented players from a club on the bones of their backside before kick-starting their careers.  

Dawson, after all, went from a signing no one expected and no one wanted to one of the Premier League’s most reliable centre-halves. Hence that ‘Ballon Dawson’ nickname.

According to BZ, former Germany U21 international Torunarigha has set his sights on leaving Hertha after receiving ‘a request’ from West Ham. What’s more, he has little interest in extending a contract that has just 12 months left to run. 

Sky Germany believe that Hertha would, therefore, be willing to accept just £4 million. A risk surely worth taking, especially with Issa Diop seemingly on his way to Fulham. 

West Ham have already spent £30 million on one new centre-half this summer; Rennes colossus Nayef Aguerd. Torunarigha would join him, Dawson and the ever-reliable Kurt Zouma. Angelo Ogbonna should soon return from a long-term injury as well. 

“I am delighted to welcome Nayef to West Ham United,” Moyes said last monht. “We have tracked his progress for some time. I’m very pleased that we have been able to complete the signing. He’s a great addition that will add to our defensive options. 

“I have been really impressed with Nayef’s character and attitude during our discussions. He has a great desire to improve and be successful. I am sure he will fit in very well to the environment we have at Rush Green.”
