Jesse Marsch has shared the text he sent to Kalvin Phillips after the midfielder left Leeds for Manchester City at the beginning of the week – following Thursday’s pre-season win over Blackpool in York.
Goals from Robin Koch, Junior Firpo, Rodrigo and Mateo Joseph saw Leeds cruise to an impressive win over Championship side Blackpool. Although the first friendly, it was a performance full of encouragement.

It comes after a incredibly busy week in which Leeds have brought in Darko Gyabi, Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra – who were all in attendance on Thursday. Phillips left the club for Manchester City in a £45million deal.
Marsch spoke to Leeds Live reporter Beren Cross following Thursday’s win. The American gaffer shared details of the text he sent Phillips following his move. He said he “can’t wait” to see Phillips win the Champions League.

It is a move that Phillips has deserved. A player that has given everything to Leeds. With his contract at Elland Road ending in 2024, it was realistically the last summer window in which Leeds could request top dollar.
There has been some criticism of the fee Leeds have got. But it is north of £40million for a player that many were keen to sell, before Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival. He has been the heartbeat of a side that returned to the top tier.
While it is painful for Leeds fans to lose their fan favourite, he has already been replaced by two eye-catching midfielders in Marc Roca and Tyler Adams. Roca impressed on debut against Blackpool on Thursday night.
