The Chronicle claim Newcastle are trying to offload Dwight Gayle to local rivals Middlesbrough with the striker’s future on Tyneside seemingly over – and the player is very interested, as he does not have to relocate.
Gayle, 32, managed just nine appearances in all competitions for Newcastle last season and is currently the club’s third-choice striker. Chris Wood and Callum Wilson are ahead, while Newcastle are likely to sign another striker.

Indeed, his six years at the club have seen Gayle play just 122 times – often from the bench. An average of around 20 games a season. But incredibly, the £40k-a-week (Spotrac) star still has two years left on his contract.
Newcastle are trying to find him a new club. Numerous other Championship clubs want him, but the Toon are trying to sell him to Boro – which prevents Gayle having to relocate his family. He is keen to move to the Riverside.
Newcastle trying to offload Gayle to Middlesbrough
Gayle desperately needs a move and the Championship seems like the most-obvious landing spot. The striker is keen to keep his family in the same place and that makes Chris Wilder’s side the clear favourite to get him.
A player that impressed Eddie Howe in training, even being given the ‘best training of the month’ award for April. Talks with Middlesbrough have been staged in recent weeks, and now, it is clear Gayle wants to move.
Newcastle fans will surely wish him well, after he scored the necessary goals to get the Toon back into the Premier League under Rafa Benitez. 23 goals in 32 Championship games during 2016-17.
