Dean Ashton has claimed that Everton winger Anthony Gordon is ‘really special’ about better than Callum Hudson-Odoi of Chelsea amid Newcastle transfer rumours, as he told talkSPORT.

The former striker added that Everton’s sought-after youngster would be a ‘superb signing’ for Eddie Howe’s ever-progressing Newcastle side.

After selling Richarlison for £60 million to Tottenham, could those on the blue half of Merseyside be about to lose yet another star player?

Well, a number of Premier League clubs are keen on Gordon’s talents, with Newcastle making contract with the Toffees for the 21-year-old.

Gordon isn’t the only winger Newcastle are looking at this summer, with Chelsea flyer Hudson-Odoi another name on their radar.

When Ashton was asked to pick between the two for Newcastle and he made it clear why he would pick Gordon over the Stamford Bridge star.

“I would probably prefer Anthony Gordon,” said Ashton. “I think he could be special. Really special.

“Whenever I have seen him, his delivery from wide areas. His workrate. I think he could be a special player.

“With Hudson-Odoi, I am just not sure where he plays. I know he has played wing-back and as a wide player. I think he’s better as a wide player than just a wing-back.

“But the whole Tuchel thing when he came in, then took him off and slated him publicly. I know he has had a lot of injuries and missed a lot of football.

“Personally, I think Anthony Gordon would be a superb signing for Newcastle.”

BAD SUMMER TO CONTINUE FOR EVERTON?

After surviving relegation by the skin of their teeth last season, the one thing Frank Lampard needed to do was re-build his squad.

But, unfortunately for him, because of the financial mess the club were in before he replaced Rafa Benitez, this job might just prove to be more difficult than he thinks.

It will be interesting to see just how bad Everton’s financial situation is and whether or not there is an offer for Gordon that they will find just too hard to turn down.

Well, Newcastle are certainly testing those waters, as Howe has all the money to spend in the world over at St James’ Park.

Only a number of years ago, Everton were spending like crazy, whilst the Magpies were just about getting low-key transfers over the line with Mike Ashley running their ship.

But times have changed big time now.
