Speaking on the Transfer Talk Podcast, Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth has been discussing Tottenham’s hunt for a new centre-back.
It’s something of an open secret that Spurs want to sign a new left-footed defender this summer as they’ve pursued the likes of Alessandro Bastoni, Josko Gvardiol and Pau Torres.
Unfortunately for Spurs, they’ve not managed to get any of those deals over the line, and now, they’ve turned their attentions to Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet.
According to Sheth, that deal is moving in the right direction and there is a growing belief that this loan transfer will eventually be finalised.
What’s been said?
Sheth spoke about Lenglet.
“They had talks with Inter Milan earlier in the window about Alessandro Bastoni, but Tottenham have now turned their attention to the Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet, they want to get him on a loan deal and there is a growing feeling that this one will get done,” Sheth said.

Good stop-gap
A one-year loan for Lenglet may not be the worst deal in the world for Spurs.
Yes, he’s not a long-term solution to this problem position, and he’s also not as talented as some of Spurs’ other targets.
However, he’s a good stop-gap that won’t cost too much, and at the end of his loan next year, Spurs can go back into the market.
Bastoni’s contract will be entering its final year at that point, and while Inter have managed to hold their nerve this summer, they could come under increasing pressure this time next year.
Lenglet may not be the most inspiring signing of all-time, but don’t be too shocked if there is a blockbuster arrival lined up for next summer.
