According to The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur are finally closing in on the signing of Djed Spence after a drawn-out summer transfer saga.
The north London outfit have been linked with Spence for what has felt like an eternity, but now, a deal has finally been agreed with Middlesbrough.
According to this report, Boro had turned down bids of £10m and £11m from Spurs, but now, a £15m deal has been agreed.
Add-ons could see this fee reach £20m, which would represent a record sale for Chris Wilder’s side.
Tottenham have been in the market for a new wing-back for quite some time now after below-par seasons from both Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty, but Spence has been known to be Spurs’ top target for months at this point.
At the age of just 21, Spurs believe Spence has an incredibly high ceiling, while the fact that he ticks the homegrown box is another added bonus for the north London club.
Spence was, of course, a key player for Nottingham Forest during their promotion campaign last term, and while he has never played at Premier League level, Spurs saw enough last season to believe that he’s ready to make the step up.
£15m for a ‘fantastic’ young wing-back who suits Antonio Conte’s system to a tee could be one of the bargains of the summer in the Premier League.
Spence is set to undergo a medical this week and Spurs hope that he’ll be signed up in time to join the rest of the squad on the pre-season trip to South Korea.
