According to De Telegraaf, Daniel Levy is not happy with the details of Steven Bergwijn’s move from Tottenham to Ajax.
What’s the story?
Well, this is interesting news for Spurs fans.
The Dutch news outlet believe Fabio Paratici – Director of Football at Tottenham – has verbally agreed a deal with Ajax which will see Bergwijn join them in a deal worth €30m (£26m).
However, Levy is not satisfied with the add-ons involved, nor is he happy about the sell-on clause included in negotiations.
Bergwijn has already agreed to join Ajax, and a medical is scheduled for the 24-year-old.
It remains to be seen if Levy’s unhappiness about the structure of the deal will be enough to cause a breakdown in negotiations, although you can understand the 60-year-old’s frustrations.
Ajax are demanding £70m for Anthony – a target for Manchester United – while they are also holding out for a sum of £43m for Lisandro Martinez, another target for Erik ten Hag as well as Arsenal.
So, if the Eredivisie champions want these monumental fees for their own players, they should be able to satisfy what others are demanding.
Tottenham must offload Steven Bergwijn
While we can sympathise with Levy, the Tottenham chairman must ensure this deal goes through.
£26m for a fringe player who has little use to Antonio Conte is too good to turn down – it is also a significant amount of money which can be reinvested into other areas.
For too long, Spurs have struggled to offload their saleable assets for decent fees, so it is imperative that this deal goes through.
Of course, Levy doesn’t want to be taken for a ride by Ajax, but if the issue really is just regarding add-ons and sell-on clauses, then we hope a compromise can be reached.
Keep an eye on this saga, as Premier League sides are also interested if Ajax fail to satisfy Levy.
