Ainsley Maitland-Niles can leave Arsenal this summer but his wages are making a move to Nottingham Forest seem a little difficult.

The Gunners are expected to cash in on a number of players this summer with Pablo Mari, Bernd Leno and Hector Bellerin among those likely to go.

Another player potentially on his way out is Maitland-Niles, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Roma.

Jose Mourinho’s men haven’t chased a permanent deal for Maitland-Niles and the 24-year-old’s future is now up in the air.

It seems clear that Maitland-Niles isn’t in Mikel Arteta’s plans having struggled for first-team action with Arsenal.

Maitland-Niles has only played 19 games in the last two Premier League seasons for Arsenal and then went on loan in both winter windows, first with West Bromwich Albion and then Roma.

Football London claim that Arsenal are open to selling Maitland-Niles this summer and Nottingham Forest are keen.

The report notes that Maitland-Niles’ wages make a deal with Forest difficult though as they chase new signings.

Taiwo Awoniyi and Dean Henderson have been Forest’s star signings so far this summer but they still need more.

Maitland-Niles is one target and his versatility will be appealing to boss Steve Cooper.

Forest need a right wing back after Djed Spence returned to Middlesbrough and the same goes for central midfielder after James Garner headed back to Manchester United.

Maitland-Niles can play in both positions but has made it clear in the past that he would prefer to play in midfield than as a right back or wing back.

That’s something for Forest to think about as they chase new signings, and with his wages potentially causing a major problem for Cooper and co, it may well be that they look elsewhere and leave Maitland-Niles in limbo at Arsenal.
