Paul Merson has been speaking about the transfer window, where he made a big claim about Liverpool and Fabio Carvalho.
What’s the story?
Well, the Sky Sports Soccer Saturday pundit believes Liverpool’s capture of the 19-year-old ranks among the top five signings of the summer so far – a big statement, to say the least.
Speaking to Sports Keeda, Merson said: “Fabio Carvalho is not someone who will start from week one for Liverpool, but this guy is a top talent and played a big role in Fulham’s promotion bid last season. I think this is the kind of signing other managers might look at and think, ‘Why didn’t we get him?’ because he’s a fantastic talent.”
We can’t help but agree.

Clearly, the 54-year-old is aware that Carvalho is unlikely to become an immediate starter at Anfield, but just like Harvey Elliott, the foundations are there for him to make an impact soon.
With someone like Jürgen Klopp at the helm, the man who coached gems such as Mario Götze and Trent Alexander-Arnold into world beaters, there is no reason why the Portugal Under-21 international cannot shine on Merseyside.
Where Liverpool could use Fabio Carvalho
Interestingly, there are a number of ways in which Klopp could use Carvalho next season.
Last season – as Transfermarkt shows – the teenager was deployed in an attacking midfield role by Marco Silva, as well as on the left flank.

Footage of Carvalho scoring his 11 goals – he also provided eight assists – primarily shows him cutting inside from the left of midfield, in a similar fashion to what Philippe Coutinho used to do.
Therefore, we feel Klopp will use his new recruit in a left-sided central midfield role, or on the left of the attack.
Wherever he plays under the German, we are confident Carvalho will become a big hit at Liverpool.
