Leeds fans were Googling the name Romeo Lavia earlier this month when reports emerged the Manchester City talent could be on his way to Elland Road – but Southampton have now won the race, spending £10million to get him.
That is according to Mail+, who follow on from Wednesday’s news that Ralph Hasenhuttl had beaten Leeds to the punch. Lavia, 18, will join the Saints – the latest teenage talent to join Southampton – for an eight-figure fee.

Reports earlier this month claimed that Leeds were interested in Belgium Under-21 star Lavia – and he could be used as a makeweight in a deal for Kalvin Phillips. The latter’s move to The Etihad is still very much on the cards.
But Southampton’s interest has always been there and on Wednesday, it was reported Lavia would be joining Southampton. Mail+ provides an update, albeit a small one, confirming Southampton will be spending £10million.
Southampton have won Lavia race: £10million to get him
Quite a pricy sum, given Lavia has managed just two senior outings for Pep Guardiola’s side. But at just 18, he has been a regular in the Under-23 side and has earned huge praise from fellow countryman Vincent Kompany.
The Manchester City legend and now-Burnley manager said Lavia is “rare”, praising his “aggression” in 2021. A gem, then, and there is no better place to deploy those incredible talents than at Southampton.
It sees Leeds miss out. While the Whites have brought in Marc Roca, they may find themselves back in the midfielder market when Phillips does go. Leeds fans will be hoping for more of a senior signing, than Lavia, as a replacement.
