Leeds United have confirmed that Liam McCarron has left the club on a permanent basis to join Championship side Stoke City – prompting both Kalvin Phillips and Sam Greenwood to react on Instagram, among others.
McCarron, 21, joined Leeds in 2019 from Carlisle United after clocking up 20 senior appearances – 16 of which came in League Two. But the Scotland Under-21 ace failed to break into Leeds United’s first-team set-up.

Other than a solitary substitute appearance in a loss to Arsenal during 2021-22, McCarron could not add to his first-team outings. Instead, he has been regular at Under-23 level, whether that is at left-back or on the wing.
Now, he has decided to leave Elland Road in the pursuit of first-team football and joins Championship side Stoke City. McCarron has penned a three-year deal at Yorkshire, posting a heartfelt message to Leeds on Instagram.
Phillips and Greenwood react: McCarron has left Leeds to join Stoke
It is a brilliant move for McCarron. Given his lack of game time at Leeds at senior level, the chance to join a club in the Championship. A big club, with play-off aspirations – is something he would have been foolish to turn down.
McCarron’s versatility, and the natural fact he is left-footed, will have swayed Stoke and Michael O’Neill to move. He will now focus on breaking into the starting XI at the Britannia in the coming months.
Well-liked at Leeds, the hard-working star was sent plenty of messages by his Leeds teammates including Kalvin Phillips – who is set to join Manchester City – and Sam Greenwood, among others.
