Nottingham Forest are reportedly looking to sign Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles after Steve Cooper’s side secured the signature of Taiwo Awoniyi for a club-record transfer fee.

According to the Daily Mail, the newly-promoted Premier League side are keen to sign the England international this summer, with Maitland-Niles expected to leave Arsenal after failing to break his way into Mikel Arteta’s plans and heading out on loan to AS Roma in January.

Despite not impressing that greatly for Jose Mourinho’s side, the 24-year-old played a role in Roma’s UEFA Europa Conference League triumph in Albania, with Maitland-Niles now expected to leave Arsenal this summer for a decent fee, with Forest seemingly leading the chase to sign the versatile Hale End graduate.

With a reported wage of £52,000-a-week, Forest could struggle to match Maitland-Niles’ salary should the Premier League side agree to a transfer fee with Arsenal to sign the midfielder. However, the financial risk could be worth it for the Garibaldi.

Cooper has proven to be an excellent talent spotter as well as a coach who can get the best out of young players, and whilst Maitland-Niles is older than the likes of Brennan Johnson, Djed Spence and James Garner, the Arsenal star could still flourish under the Forest boss.

Indeed, Maitland-Niles incredible versatility makes the England international an ideal player for Cooper’s system, with the 24-year-old able to play in either central midfield or as a wing-back on either flank, with the Arsenal talent enjoying his best football down the right.

Maitland-Niles’ Arsenal career looks all but over, and for Forest, the midfielder could be an excellent addition for next season given the 24-year-old’s track record in the Premier League for the Gunners as well as out on loan for West Brom in the 2020/21 season.

Indeed, Maitland-Niles might be a costly signing, but given his versatility and ability to adapt to almost any position, the Arsenal man is the perfect player for Cooper and how the Forest boss wants to play.
