Lyon superstar and reported Liverpool target Rayan Cherki has confirmed that he is in talks to sign a new contract with the French giants, with discussions heading in the right direction for the teenage attacker.

Speaking to RMC Sport, the 18-year-old talent revealed that talks over a new contract with Lyon are going well, with Cherki even hinting that he is excited for his future with his boyhood club in what could be a major blow for Liverpool’s chances at landing the forward.

Liverpool are reportedly interested in Cherki with the French youngster one of the most exciting talents in Europe who has already broken numerous records with Lyon, such as being one of the club’s youngest ever players as well as their youngest ever goalscorer.

The Reds, as well as Real Madrid, will have to pay a reported £30m if they’re to land Cherki in the coming days, though with the forward set to sign a new contract with Lyon, it is likely that Liverpool and Los Blancos now stand no chance at landing the 18-year-old.

Cherki came through Lyon’s famed academy and is regarded by many as one of the club’s most exciting talents to ever come through the system, with the forward set to become a star in the coming years for one of Europe’s biggest sides. Yet for now, the youngster is keen to remain with the French side.

Cherki said when asked how talks were going over signing a new contract with Lyon: “Discussions are progressing well . The two parties, both from my side and that of the club’s, get on well. I hope to be able to do great things with Lyon.”

Liverpool have already broke the bank this summer in the form of club-record signing Darwin Nunez, yet with Mohamed Salah’s future still up in the air, signing Cherki for the coming years would have been another genius move from Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Indeed, the teenager is one of the best in the world in his age group, and Liverpool’s track record of developing players under Klopp has been second-to-none, something which could have developed Cherki into a world-class talent.
