The prospect of reported Liverpool target Ousmane Dembele joining Chelsea has grown a little more probable.
Earlier in the week, it was reported by Spanish outlet Sport that Chelsea had actually dropped out of the race to sign the Barcelona winger who, at the moment, is leaving Camp Nou on a free transfer within days.
Liverpool are reported to have made contact about signing the France international, who cost the Primera Division outfit an eye-watering £135 million five years ago [BBC Sport].
However, there’s been new intel from Spain.
According to Marca, Chelsea are actually winning the race to sign Dembele, with the report claiming that Thomas Tuchel’s side are the ‘best placed team’ to snap up the jet-heeled attacker.
The report has also added that Dembele is due back from his holiday shortly and will begin to analyse various offers that he has from a number of clubs.
If Liverpool are genuinely interested, then Ousmane Dembele joining Chelsea would hurt the Merseysiders.
But are they actually interested? Well it remains to be seen.
With Sadio Mane having joined Bayern Munich and Taki Minamino set to follow him through the exit door, that’s two wingers Jurgen Klopp will be losing this summer and neither Darwin Nunez or Fabio Carvalho are wide players.
With that in mind, it’s definitely plausible that Liverpool could sign a winger before the transfer window shuts.
But with speculation about Dembele to Anfield slowing down, it’s also plausible that the Blues really are in the lead to sign Dembele, who Tuchel worked with at Borussia Dortmund.
