Alan Shearer has jokingly told Harry Kane to ‘go abroad’ when asked about the Tottenham Hotspur hitman breaking his all-time Premier League record.
The Newcastle United icon is the competition’s most prolific goalscorer of all time, having netted 260 top-flight goals.
However, the Tottenham sensation has a genuine chance at breaking that record.
The 28-year-old, who turns 29 in a month, has netted 183 Premier League goals, leaving him 77 behind Shearer.
And although that remains a major deficit, the legendary marksman has conceded that Kane has a ‘really good chance’ of doing it.
He told Sky Sports: “He’s got a really good opportunity of doing it. He’s a fantastic player. I know he wants it – and wants it badly – so yeah he’s got a really good chance of doing it. I think he should be abroad!”
Could Kane break Alan Shearer’s record?
In a word, definitely.
But will he? Well that’s a different question altogether.
Kane wasn’t even Tottenham’s top goalscorer last season, with Son Heung-min sharing the Premier League’s Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah.
That could perhaps be attributed to the fact that under Antonio Conte, the England international seemed to be operating in a slightly deeper position and was often the one creating the chances, not finishing them.
With Spurs reportedly in the market for a playmaker this summer, the creativity burden could well fall to someone else next season in an addition that may, in theory, allow Kane to rediscover his talismanic best.
But so long as he’s enjoying a slight tweak in his positional play, Shearer’s record has more chance of staying intact for a while longer.
