The Umbrella Academy isn’t one of those shows that you can truly enjoy unless it has your full, undivided attention.
Created by Steve Blackman, the American superhero show is based on My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way’s comic book series of the same name. The Dark Horse Comics title translated to the screen on Netflix back in 2019 and swiftly secured a passionate fandom.
After two seasons, the project was growing more and more ambitious and hopes couldn’t have been higher for another season, despite season 2 catching up with the source material.
Fortunately, we were all welcomed back into this intriguing world on Wednesday, June 22nd 2022.
However, the first episode may have felt a little jarring, plunging fans into an alternate timeline that encouraged some to ask pressing questions. Amongst them… how many babies were born in The Umbrella Academy?
SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3 EPISODE 1
How many babies were born in The Umbrella Academy?
The series’ original voiceover acknowledged that 43 babies were born on the 12th hour on the first day in October back in 1989. Of these children, seven of them were adopted and this, in turn, facilitated the events of The Umbrella Academy.
However, this is only in the context of the original timeline. Season 3 opens and envelopes audiences in an alternate timeline, introducing them to the Sparrows.
In this new timeline, Entertainment Weekly highlights that only 16 babies were born at the same time on that pivotal day. However, just like the original timeline, some of them were adopted by this timeline’s Sir Reginald Hargreeves.
While one version of this superhero tale begins with a Russian woman giving birth, this time we find ourselves in Seoul, South Korea. Nevertheless, the same result is Reginald making the rounds and attempting to take some of the mysterious and superpowered infants into his care.
‘We wanted to have a big bang for the opening’
Speaking of the opening, some of the details may have been had to take in after such a wild start.
Indeed, showrunner Steve Blackman recently opened up about the direction they decided to go in straight out of the gate while chatting with Screenrant:
‘Well, we wanted to have a big bang for the opening and we had this great moment of Diego’s hallucination caused by Jamie, played by Cazzie David. It was a lot of fun for me to think, ‘What would Diego’s hallucination be?’ I thought it was just absurd that he’d come up with Footloose…”
He continued: “… so we just had great fun talking about that and I thought, ‘Can the actors, would they be able to do that?’”
Is The Umbrella Academy renewed for season 4?
No, Netflix nor the creators have confirmed a season 4 renewal.
We predict that an announcement may be made as early as July 2022. However, the aforementioned Screenrant interview saw Steve Blackman reveal that the team know what the fourth season will be, despite not having been picked up yet.
The Umbrella Academy is streaming exclusively on Netflix.
