Emmanuel Longelo and Harrison Ashby will get an opportuity to prove themselves for West Ham United during the Premier League club’s pre-season preparations, as reported by The Athletic.
There was a very real chance that both full-backs would have been saying their goodbyes this summer. Ashby was due to become a free-agent next month while Longelo has attracted plenty of interest on both sides of the border.
But, as reported by The Athletic, West Ham have opted to trigger the one-year extension clause in Ashby’s contract. Longelo now looks set to stick around too, after the Hammers rejected two bids from QPR for the reported Rangers and Bournemouth target.
What’s more, Ashby and Longelo will be given a chance to make an impression on David Moyes during West Ham’s pre-season preparations against the likes of Servette, Lens and Ipswich Town.
Big hopes for Ashby and Longelo at West Ham United
Scotland U21 international Ashby could potentially become the club’s third-choice right-back, following Ryan Fredericks’ move to Bournemouth. Attack-minded and exciting, Ashby contributed three goals and six assists for the second-string in 2021/22, rewarded with a Premier League debut against Arsenal in December.
“Harrison got a goal and an assist,” former Hammers U23 coach Dimitri Halajko said after Ashby’s Man of the Match performance in a 2-0 EFL Trophy victory over Gillingham.
“Real quality moments, both of them.”
Ashby, like Hammers talisman Declan Rice, joined the London giants from local rivals Chelsea as a teenager.
Longelo, meanwhile, looks set to stay put after coming within touching distance of a January move to newly-promoted Nottingham Forest. The 21-year-old left-back provided five assists last term. And should he impress in pre-season, he could be afforded the opportunity to put pressure on the injury-prone Arthur Masuaku and the veteran Aaron Cresswell.
West Ham continue to be linked with a number of talented left-backs, including Juventus’ Luca Pellegrini.
