Skeleton Knight in Another World season 2 renewal status

As previously noted, Skeleton Knight in Another World has not yet been publicly renewed for season 2 and unfortunately, the chances of a return are now dependent on source material vs popularity.

On the one hand, the anime adaptation of Skeleton Knight in Another World has plenty of source material available from the original light novel series for a second season. Per Anime Geek, the anime is likely to find a stopping point around volume 3 of Ennki Hakari’s original series.

The good news is that as of June 23rd, 10 light novel volumes have been published in Japan. This means that there is enough content to be adapted for TV across potentially three full 12-episode seasons.

The bad news is that the anime does not seem to have significantly improved the sales of either the light novel or the follow-up manga adaptation; which can be a frustratingly important sticking point for anime renewals. Unfortunately, Skeleton Knight in Another World did not feature on Oricon’s Top 20 sales rankings for April 2022 when the anime premiered, for both the light novel and manga series.

The anime is also scoring a 6.8/10 on IMDB, 70% on Anilist and 3.9/5 on Anime Planet. Skeleton Knight in Another World is also being rated at a 7.24/10 on MyAnimeList, making it just the 21st highest-rated series from the Spring anime slate. The TV adaptation could also only manage a peak of 13th place on AniTrendz ongoing fan polls.

So, whilst these scores aren’t necessarily a reason to lose all hope for Skeleton Knight in Another World season 2, they certainly won’t help considering the lack of boost to the light novel and manga sales.

Interestingly, despite these rather underwhelming scores, there is a chance that Studio Kai, the team behind the anime adaptation, could view these ratings slightly differently. Skeleton Knight in Another World is arguably one of their biggest titles to date and out of their six previous projects, two of those have already been sequels.

With their next three titles all set to debut later this year (Prince of Tennis and Shine Post in July, Fuuto PI in August), the studio may look to start early development of Skeleton Knight season 2 by the end of 2022.

Where to read the original series

Whilst 10 volumes of the light novel series have been published in Japan, nine of those are currently available to read in English, with volume 10 set to launch in March 2023.

Fans can acquire copies of the light novel series via Rightstuf, Bookshop, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Indigo and Indiebound.

10 volumes of the manga adaptation have also been published in Japan, with eight of those being accessible to English readers. Copies of the manga can be purchased via Amazon Kindle, Book Walker, Google Play, Kobo and Barnes & Noble’s Nook service.
